Chatswood is a major suburb of Sydney loaced around 9 kilometres north of the CBD. It sits conveniently close to everything and the railway station is a transport hub, making commuting easy. There are ample employment opportunities in the area with Chatswood’s commercial hub and it also has vibrant shopping centres and a real mix of people, old and young. Long established residents as well as newcomers like the fact that there are still many parts of the suburb with large blocks- ideal for growing families. The suburb does cater well for people with disabilities and mobility scooters can enjoy the many restaurants and shops that have ready access for disabled people. We spoke to mobility scooter user Ron recently, who commented very favourably about life in Chatswood; “I’m retired and am enjoying life with the wife. I’m not as mobile as I used to be though and rely a fair bot on my scooter to get around. We really do enjoy going to the RSL for lunch, it’s right next to the station and has a great specials. Wheelchairs and mobility scooters no problem. We do our shopping at Chatswood Chase and my scooter gets me round to all the spots we need.”

Balmain is one of the oldest and most attractive parts of Sydney, filled with beautiful old buildings; magnificent views directly across to the city and the harbour; great markets at the weekend and fabulous parks and gardens and cycling and walking tracks directly into the city. There is a great neighbourhood feel to it and any resident will comment on this and how friendly and hospitable the locals are. Balmain is also renowned for its great array of bars, restaurants and cafes. With all these highly desirable attributes, Balmain’s real estate comes at a premium. There is also a diverse population including people with disabilities. Local resident and mobility scooter user Renee had this to say: “The roads are a bit hilly and the roads are mostly narrow but I don’t care! I wouldn’t live anywhere else and a big part is my neighbours and the community feel- we look after each other and people are just so friendly. I’m still walking following my hip operation but It’s a struggle over much more than 100 metres and that’s where I love my Luggie scooter. It gives me the freedom to handle longer distances with no fuss and that’s all the freedom I need.”

Randwick is an old suburb of Sydney located only 3 kilometres from the city centre. It was and remains an ‘edgy’ suburb and has a casual feel about it. The old railway station and the atmosphere of the suburb is evocatively captured in Arthur Stretton’s paining, The Railway Station, Redfern, which is just south of where Central Station is today. Redfern has been gentrified in recent years while still retaining a diverse population, included amongst whom are a significant number of residents with some form of disability. Speaking of the railway station, it’s only recently that long awaited plans for a lift to enable those with disabilities to get to platforms have finally come to fruition. Local resident and mobility scooter user Steve says: “I have always liked living here- Redfern’s always had a great about for it. I use my mobility scooter for everything especially getting to the doctor and chemist and once a week or so I’ll travel down to Surry Hills Village to buy all the basics and of course when the Rabbitohs are playing I’ll go to cheer them on.”

Mobility Scooters Manly, NSW

Manly is a popular beachside suburb of Sydney in the Northern Beaches area of Sydney; only 11km from the city, it’s within easy reach via the fast ferry which provides a great experience and is a real boon for CBD commuters. Unfortunately, there is no train line out this way. Manly abounds in fantastic bars, bistros and restaurants and the beaches and parks in the area are fabulous. Manly’s Council is very proactive in the area of people with disabilities and there is an active Access and Disability Committee which makes recommendations to Council regarding improving access. Most of the arcades in the area are mobility scooter friendly. One standout feature is the beach wheelchair, which is available at the Manly surf pavilion which enables people with disabilities to get right across the sand and down to the water’s edge. Chris had this to say about his Mobility Scooter: “My disability progressively worsened over time and I got rid of my car three years ago. I didn’t really need it anymore and parking restrictions around here are a real pest. Nowadays, my Mobility Scooter gets me everywhere I want to go- especially my favourite activity on a sunny day- heading off along the Esplanade and down to the Surf Life Saving Club for a nice cold beer.”

Reservoir is a traditionally working class area 12 km north of Melbourne, and a 30-minute drive into Melbourne CBD. It is very much a multi-cultural area, which is one of its charms. Reservoir is well serviced by public transport and remains a very affordable area for its 50, 000 residents. The City of Darebin in which Reservoir is located has taken a leading role in focussing on access for residents and visitors with disability or mobility issues and has produced online access and mobility maps. These highlight accessible toilets, car parking, public transport stops and safe road crossing points. There are numerous shopping centres throughout with Edwardes Street and Broadway of particular note with their many iconic businesses. Raelene has lived on the north side of the city for her whole life and in Reservoir for over thirty years. Raelene uses a mobility scooter and says “When I bought my mobility scooter four years ago, my main question was, will it get me from my home to Summerhill Shopping Centre? The answer was ‘yes’ and it’s now become part of my life. I’m about a kilometre further along Plenty Road and it does the trip with ease- at least 4 times every week.”

Berwick lies south-east of Melbourne on the fringes of the suburban area; in fact, it only became a suburb in the 1990’s. Previously Berwick was surrounded by prime agricultural land. It has retained something of its rural character but has grown greatly with today’s population of 45, 000. It’s certainly a popular place and the only real issue for some people who work in the CBD is driving time, which can range from 50 and 90 minutes. Train travel time from Beaconsfield station is just on 60 minutes, definitely making it a viable option for mobility scooter users. Berwick resident Jenny had this to say about life in Berwick for a mobility scooter user: “When I moved to Berwick 25 years ago it was a big country town. The cost of my house was amazingly low compared to now. My mobility scooter gets me around to most of the places I want to from Chirnside Road where I live. Casey Hospital is nearby and there’s shops nearby which my scooter gets me to- the milk bar, pizza shop and mini-mart. A favourite activity of my mine is travelling on the scooter to Wilson Botanic Park, which is an oasis of gardens, flora and birdlife. It’s very peaceful and my scooter enables me to enjoy it to the full.”
