Pakenham is located 56 Kilometres from Melbourne and now has a population of around 35, 000. Until relatively recently it was regarded a country town but is now considered almost a satellite town of Melbourne. Cardinia Shire Council is well regarded by mobility scooter users- for example they have a Positive Aging Officer and run a worthwhile Mobility Scooter safety and education program. The scooter Recharge Scheme has a good uptake here, with about ten sites including the library and pharmacies. Locals advise that the train service in to Melbourne is pretty regular but it is a long trip and it’s not a trip that mobility scooter users would necessarily be keen on undertaking. As local Greg says, “I get my scooter onto the train OK occasionally when I want to get into the city but it is sometimes a hassle when it’s busy and no way will I do it during peak hour.” Jon, another Pakenham mobility scooter says it’s pretty straightforward getting around town: “The Central Market is only a km or so from where I live and I get there several times a week and to the pokies for a few games in my scooter.”
