Wodonga is a large rural city in northern Victoria on the Murray River adjoining the city of Albury on the NSW side. Wodonga and its surrounding area has a population of around 35, 000 with many more on the other side of the Murray. There is quite a strong manufacturing and retail presence and the relationship with Albury is interesting. While the cities are close to each other, they are also quite different, with separate local governments and government services- and of course they are in different States! What is Wodonga like for mobility scooter users? Well it certainly helps that the City of Wodonga has a strong focus on disability access, as seen by the City’s Access for All Strategy and the Disability Action Plan. Mobility scooter users really appreciate the RECHARGE scheme which has been rolled out across the City with quite a number of convenient access points. Local resident Robert says “It’s the little things that make the difference. As a mobility scooter user, I find that the Council’s ‘Mobility Map’ is a real winner. It’s designed to help people with disabilities move freely around town with lots of information about accessible public buildings, parks and gardens, toilets and shops. Well done Council!”
